CBD 101

“So what's all the
fuss about CBD?”

It’s a question that I get asked every day. And if you're anything like me, I'm more concerned about what I put into my pet's body than my own.

There’s a lot of doubt, misinformation, and just plain confusion out there. Let’s get some facts straight...

Cannabidiol (CBD for short) is one of more than 60 unique compounds produced naturally by the cannabis plant. It acts on the body’s endocannabinoid system (whew, that’s a mouthful!), a central regulator of several processes in your pet’s body (and your human body, too). The endocannabinoid system regulates things like appetite, pain, inflammation, response, mood, memory, and more.

CBD binds to the receptors in this system and has shown enormous promise in helping to maintain a consistent and healthy baseline of wellness.

All Gizzls products, from our biscuits to our tinctures, use lab tested, full-spectrum cannabis oil made from medical-grade organic cannabis flowers from one trusted supplier.

An important fact to remember: CBD is also non-habit forming. Keeping your pet comfortable and stress-free should be comfortable and stress-free for you, too.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with a pet’s endocannabinoid system, which is known to coordinate bodily processes like digestion, mood, pain, inflammation, and sleep.

Full-spectrum CBD oil offers relief from the following conditions (and many more):

  • Joint pain and inflammation, especially in ageing pets

  • Chronic pain

  • Arthritis

  • Lack of appetite

  • Separation anxiety

  • Excessive barking

  • Nausea from car rides

  • Stressful car rides

  • Muscle spasms

  • Recovery from surgery or illness

  • Pacing or inability to relax

  • Fear of thunderstorms, fireworks or other loud noises

  • Aggression towards other dogs

  • Constant itching from allergies or other causes

  • Symptoms of cancer receptors found in the brain

  • Skin conditions

  • Seizures

  • Gastrointestinal issues such as IBS

DID YOU KNOW?

Without any external influence, a pet’s body naturally produces its own cannabinoids that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system. Of all phytocannabinoids being researched now, CBD has shown the most therapeutic promise in early clinical studies.

A lot of pet owners use CBD treats and oils as daily supplements for general well-being. More specifically, it helps to reduce pain in injured pets, increase mobility with our arthritic furry friends, assist with digestion, and—one of the bigger ones—to help your pet relax! Separation anxiety or anxiety in general (fireworks, anyone?) is a very real, very common problem for pets. CBD can help.

Our full-spectrum CBD oil also contains Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that are known to balance metabolism and reduce inflammation – functional ingredients for a healthy, happy pet!

WHY USE GIZZLS FOR HEALTHY PETS?

We make products for pets with wellness in mind. We want you to make the most of all your adventures with your best friend. Gizzls treats are made using the best full-spectrum oil and finest natural ingredients. No animal by-products, meals, corn, wheat nor anything artificial, be it preservatives, colours or flavours, will ever find their way into our products. All the meat is sourced locally at Gizzls-vetted farms in South Africa to ensure it's not just free-range but also free from hormones and any other nasties. As for the vegetables, these are all seasonal and sourced from local community gardens that don‘t use pesticides.

Helping owners have healthier, calmer, and happier pets has been our mission from the start – and giving pets only the very best is what we do.

ARE THERE ANY ADVERSE SIDE EFFECTS OF USING THE BISCUITS OR OIL?

Gizzls biscuits and oils are completely safe. They’re non-toxic, non-habit forming, and not psychoactive, either. In fact, customers and vets who use our products have never reported any adverse side effects.

CAN MY PET TAKE GIZZLS IF HE IS ON OTHER MEDICATION OR SUPPLEMENTS?

Of course it’s always advisable to do your research when using any supplement with your pet. That could just mean a quick phone call to your vet, or it might mean a thorough investigation on a medication’s listed interactions and/or side effects. After all, you’re the best advocate for your pet out there, and we know you take that role seriously! (We know we do.)

But, as we’ve heard from many happy customers, we’re happy to say that many owners use CBD in conjunction with traditional therapies and drugs, as it’s a safe, non-toxic and natural solution to some of those pesky problems.

IS CBD LEGAL?

That’s a resounding yes! We’re excited to say that CBD is, in fact, legal.

HOW WAS THE RECIPE FORMULATED?

Gizzls CBD treats are specially formulated with an animal nutritionist and taste great. This way, you can ensure your pet gets the correct CBD dosage for their needs as well as the right nutrition via a yummy 100% grain-free treat.

For me, the proof is in the way your pet experiences relief from so many of the symptoms plaguing him/her. You know your pet best, and it’ll be obvious to you that there's something special about these cannabinoids.

DID YOU KNOW?

A pet’s endocannabinoid receptors respond to our products much the same way they respond to their own internally-produced cannabinoids. This just means that when these receptors are activated, they help coordinate those processes we’ve been talking about (relief from pain, inflammation, sleep, anxiety). With that understanding, it’s obvious CBD is a healthy non-toxic way to lend a hand to your endocannabinoid system – whether you’re a human or an animal!

CAN GIZZLS BISCUITS OR OILS GET MY PET HIGH?

Nope. Won’t happen, and let me tell you why: our biscuits and oils contain full-spectrum CBD that contains only small amounts of THC (that’s ultimately the stuff that gets you “high”) but is needed to achieve the Entourage Effect. Our supplier uses only the indica and sativa outdoor plants due to the fact that they are high in CBD and low in THC. The CBD oil contains small amounts of THC, which means you won’t have any high pets on your hands (although they will feel much better!).

WHAT IS THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT?

Confused by this term? I was too. The Entourage Effect actually just means the “whole-plant” effect.

CBD doesn’t do so well in a pet’s (or human's) system without other compounds native to cannabis. This symbiotic relationship, between CBD and other cannabinoids like THC, CBC, CBG and others is called the “Entourage Effect”. It's the relationship between different compounds in cannabis working together to channel the CB1 and CB2 neuroreceptors natural to the body to provide maximum relief for debilitating symptoms. To take it a step further, the entourage effect doesn’t just apply to cannabinoids. Terpenes, the aromatic compounds natural to most plants, are especially concentrated in cannabis. These aromatic compounds have been found to provide significant relief for many chronic conditions just by themselves.

The entourage effect, results when the many components within the cannabis plant interact with the body to produce a stronger influence than any one of those components alone – it's a synergistic effect.

And it's what differentiates isolates and hemp oil commonly found in health shops and pharmacy’s countrywide to full-spectrum CBD oil.

That’s why all of our products include full-spectrum CBD oil, to ensure we are doing everything possible for the happiest, calmest, healthiest pet out there.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULL-SPECTRUM, CBD ISOLATE AND HEMP SEED OIL?

Knowing the difference between full-spectrum, CBD isolate and hemp oil matters, and it matters a lot. Here’s why...

Full-spectrum CBD

The "whole food" version, as it's a 100% unrefined extract and the most expensive. Full-spectrum CBD is produced by extracting all the cannabinoids and terpenes found in the cannabis plant, including trace amounts of THC. Because full-spectrum CBD contains a full range of cannabinoids and terpenes, it can deliver the Entourage Effect with powerful medical benefits that will far exceed those delivered by CBD isolate, but it won't get your pet 'high'. It’s CBD the way nature intended.

CBD isolate

Isolate is pretty much what it sounds like: it’s CBD that’s processed to remove everything that isn’t CBD itself. The result is the most inexpensive form of CBD around and—at 99.9%—the purest, too. CBD isolate products do not contain any other cannabinoids or terpenes, and therefore, will not deliver the Entourage Effect. They can deliver the therapeutic effects of CBD, but none of the powerful medical benefits of full-spectrum CBD.

Hemp Seed Oil

This type of oil is an expensive nutritional supplement and will not aid in treating any of the ailments which CBD oil can assist with. Hemp seed oil is a perfectly good seed oil that’s high in antioxidants, omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, but it has no medical benefits.

OUR CBD

By using carefully controlled organic cannabis – which only contains small amounts of THC – we ensure that the lab can extract all of the CBD goodness. Using the most hygienic and least intrusive methods to extract the oil, our CBD oil is completely free from any herbicides, pesticides, GMO products, preservatives, or any other form of additive. So you're are getting pure full-spectrum CBD in its oil carrier (grapeseed) – nothing else added. The entire process – from soil to oil – is a controlled one, but it's worth it because the care you put in, is the quality you get out.
