5 Things you Need to Know about CBD for Pets

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

Do you hesitate to use CBD for your pets because you think that it doesn't work and is just a fad? Are you worried that your fur babies will get high with CBD treats and oil?

There's no need to worry, because your pets, just like humans, can benefit HUGELY from CBD.

Here are 5 things you need to know about CBD for Pets.

CBD will not get your pets ‘high.’

Since CBD is derived from cannabis plants, most people would assume that it has the psychoactive effects people get from marijuana. So will CBD get my pet high?

Nope. Won’t happen, and let me tell you why: our treats and oils contain full-spectrum CBD that contains only trace amounts of THC (that’s ultimately the stuff that gets you “high”) but is needed to achieve the Entourage Effect. Which means you won’t have any high pets on your hands (although they will feel much better!).

Relieves anxiety and stress

Just like for humans, anxiety can be a crippling condition for pets. And as a pet owner, watching your furry friend deal with the symptoms of anxiety can be heartbreaking, too.

Luckily, research shows that CBD, a completely natural compound, can offer fast, natural relief from anxiety and its symptoms without producing any unwanted side effects.

For pets with anxiety, CBD induces the endocannabinoid system to increase the availability of serotonin, the “feel-good chemical.” Even more exciting, researchers have recently discovered that CBD possibly reduces what’s called learned fear or automatically fearful reactions to certain situations that have been “taught” to us by our previous experiences. (Think things like phobias and PTSD, issues that are very common in rescue dogs.) CBD may do more than simply chill things out in the moment. It may also help dogs “unlearn” habitual fears so that they’re unafraid when they confront the same circumstances in the future.

A powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reliever

Our pooches aren’t immune to pain and inflammation. Although they can't tell us how they're feeling, the signs are very clear – change of mood, aggressiveness, whimpering and not wanting to do their favourite things, like going for walkies.

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties that target cannabinoid receptors, and that makes it a potent pain reliever for your pets. Unlike NSAIDs that have nasty side-effects, especially if used long-term, CBD has no known side effects and it is completely safe to be used, even for long periods.

Manage seizures (epileptic illnesses)

Seeing your furry little friend have a seizure or epilepsy can be extremely frightening. The good news is that CBD oil has a positive effect on your dog’s seizure activity. While there’s no shortage of prescription anticonvulsants available to you for your dog, unlike many of these medicines, CBD produces no serious side effects. Actually, the only side effects some pet parents report after using CBD is some mild temporary drowsiness.

Here’s the results of a groundbreaking pilot study on CBD in the treatment of epilepsy in dogs and a very interesting article on seizures in dogs in general. This article also addresses the link between your pup’s diet and seizures.
