5 ways Turmeric can spice up your dog’s health

Updated: Jun 29, 2021

Bright yellow and best known for its ability to colour and flavour curries, turmeric is more than just a spice for show. A member of the ginger family, turmeric has some incredible wellness enhancing properties courtesy of its main active ingredient; curcumin. Studies have shown that regularly including turmeric in your dog’s diet can have amazing health benefits.

So, how turmeric can improve your pet’s life?

1. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory

When your dog’s body is exposed to a virus, bacteria or injury his immune system responds by sending a large amount of white blood cells to the infected or damaged area which fend off the bad stuff, speed up healing and keep the rest of his body safe and well. This is a healthy and natural bodily response to a short term ailment.

Ongoing inflammation however, when your dog’s body produces an excess of inflammatory white blood cells over a period of weeks, months or years, essentially attacking itself, is the cause of most diseases including cancer, arthritis and allergies.

In order to stop these nasty diseases in their tracks or help curb the progress of an existing disease, your dog needs an anti-inflammatory. Hello turmeric, a natural anti-inflammatory packing all the punch of many prescription medications without the nasty side effects.

2. Turmeric reduces joint swelling & pain from arthritis

Because of its ability to block the action of inflammatory molecules in the body, daily doses of turmeric can help to reduce the severity of joint swelling caused by arthritis and in turn reduce your dog’s pain levels and help them to move around less creakily. 3. Turmeric helps to keep your dog’s heart healthy Free radicals are chemical molecules that cause cell damage in a dog’s body and these pesky little nasties are often responsible for cardiovascular (heart) problems. You’ll likely have heard of antioxidant supplements which may protect cells against the damage caused by rampaging free radicals. Turmeric is one of those antioxidants.

4. Turmeric can help to fight off cancer

Studies have shown that turmeric can prevent the growth of some pre-cancerous cells and helps to kill off other cancerous cells that have already taken hold by reducing the growth, development and formation of these nasties at a molecular level, thanks again to its antioxidant properties.

5. Turmeric can help with gastrointestinal disorders

Digestive issues, food allergies and gut problems can often be the result of our unwelcome guest; inflammation. Adding turmeric to your dog’s food can reduce gut lining inflammation and aid in normalising digestion. Great for dogs with squirly tummies and bad gas.
