Where it all began
Gizzy, a rescue part Maine Coon, part pavement special, is a big bundle of adorable fluff, but all of a sudden he lost a lot of weight and stopped grooming himself.
Rushing him to the vet, he was diagnosed with a serious UTI (urinary tract infection) and further tests revealed he has serious kidney problems. There was talk of keeping him comfortable for his life expectancy of about 6 months. I was devastated, he's only 5 years old.
The vet immediately started him on chronic medication, but after two weeks there was no change, he was still listless, hiding in the cupboard and not interested in eating. After spending many late nights researching CBD oil, the more I read, the more I was convinced that this was the way forward.
After giving him CBD oil, I noticed the difference in him within a week, he was eating a lot more, his eyes were brighter and he was grooming himself again. Fast forward three months and he’s put on 2kgs of weight, which is very unusual for a "kidney cat". When I first took him to the vet in May, he had weighed 3.1kg and he was now a healthy 5.3kg, which is not far off what the big fluff weighed before he became ill.
It was during this emotionally exhausting time that the idea for Gizzls CBD treats was born. I was determined to create a way to give him the right dosage of oil but without the stress (for either of us). Chasing a cat around while trying not to spill oil everywhere isn't a fun game for anyone!
As cats with kidney issues have a diet that's very specific and crucial to their well-being, the treats were developed with an animal nutritionist and also, so no one feels left out, we created treats for cats and dogs with other ailments and for their general well-being.
Where we are now
At his last weight in on the 20 March 2020, Gizzy has put on more weight and is now a very healthy 5.5kg. I've watched Gizzls CBD treats dramatically improve the health and well-being of my beloved fur babies and know they can help yours as much as they have my own. When it comes to our pets, we can never do enough for their happiness and health, as it all stems from love.
Today, Gizzy isn't the only one thriving from his namesake treats. He's also got a doggie sister, a hugely energetic German Shepherd called Indie. At 4 years old, Indie started limping and not wanting to jump up on the bed or play with Gizzy, two of her favourite things in the world. After X-rays confirmed she had early-onset arthritis that would only get worse with age, I started her on CBD. Within a month, she was back to her old self – jumping up on the bed and wanting to play.
